a "GOOD FOOD" post

Matcha Green Tea with Cheesecake Fondue Sampler at Capstone Tea

Blackbottom Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Filling (Original Recipe Here)
- my changes: skipped the salt, grinded up the chocolate chips and added them with the cake mix; the cream cheese filling was really the cream cheese icing from the red velvet cupcakes in my last post.
These turned out delicious! They weren't that pretty to look at but my taste buds were very happy. I only got to eat 2/12 of these - my family took the rest while they were cooling in the fridge!

Steamed Egg Bowls with Seaweed and Ham (inspired by this)
SO GOOD - a very simple recipe that anyone could make their own. I added a bit of the seaweed to the eggs and the leftovers I added to the rice. Totally making this again! (Gotta find nicer bowls though :p)

Supposely Red

Red Velvet Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting (Recipe)
Success! The cocoa power I used was very light so it blended with the red food coloring to make pink-ish cupcakes. Not as fancy as ~Red~ velvet cupcakes and the texture was spongier than I would have liked. But still...success! I made fail!sugar cookies the other day - I don't know how it happened but they were awful.

Epic Day

The best days during the break are when you start the day with only one single task but end up doing more than you planned for.Yesterday was one of those days!

Stop 1 - Morning walk with Winnie
Winnie and I have been taking a lot of morning walks lately. Are we finally taking initiative to get ourselves fit? Not really, I like going out for walks! Yesterday we decided to go visit a small park/forest near our homes...yeah we live near a forest. amazing.
For "directionally challenged" people, it probably wasn't the smartest idea to go off the paved trails. We wandered off to a muddier, and narrower trail where we found cool cliffs and undisturbed flowers.

When we tried to get out of the forest, the first exit we found lead us to this really steep downhill. Neither of us felt comfortable going down so we made a loop back. You would think going back the same way we came would lead us to the same entrance but nope, that's not what happened! Hahaha, how did we even make it out?

Stop 2 - being Mall Rats
On my way home, I bumped into Yvonne who was on her way to do some shopping with Kitty. I had the fear of being bored at home so even with muddy boots and tired legs...I went along!

Stop 3 - Non stop eating
Any quota for extra calories was gone by the time I had chicken mcnuggets but that didn't stop me from eating... especially if I had friends who were cooking and making yummy foods!

"Happiness is more complicated than that. You're asking for an absolute answer to a question that has no absolutes. It's not like happiness is a switch that can only be set to on or off. Anyway, I am not unhappy. Just not, overall, completely happy."
- Anne Giardini (The Sad Truth about Happiness)

Should I be ashamed that I judge books by their covers? It's how I pick my books! I find the back cover of this book especially pretty. Simple, elegant and pink! The gloomy title got me too. Superficial and attracted to things with depressing undertones. Yup, that's me. :P

I love the pattern on the back of the book and studied it for the longest time. I wasn't sure if I could recreate it with my own spin but here is my attempt:
My lines are no where near the clean lines in the original pattern. Out of habit, I like to run the pen twice but it's often comes out too thick for this style....room for improvement I suppose! Must gain the confidence to draw the line right the first time!

Doodling in Thought...

If you're around me long enough you'll often find me doodling away in random swirls and circles. I don't think deeply about the actual lines when I'm doing these... the way it forms just makes sense. It's probably why doodling is so therapeutic! Things make more sense when I'm focused on little areas instead of the whole page. Thoughts stop racing, allowing time for it to absorb in and reorganize. If I'm lucky I can stop thinking all together. It's a lot like being on auto pilot. Try it out one day!

People often ask me when it even begins because the whole thing looks weaved together. Sometimes even I can't tell! (this one is obvious where it starts though :p) I usually start small - in corner and work my way across the page or if I'm feeling adventurous I'll start in the middle and expand outward (except this rarely happens). I never "finish" (does it ever finish?) these in one sitting either. It's tiring!

April Review

April was a better month. It was far from being an easy month nor was it a perfect month but it was decent enough to make me feel self-fulfilled. The days at the beginning of the month were mostly spent on campus, studying for final exams, going to review sessions or at home. Those days were so alike and seemed to blend in with each other so I'm surprised I got a different photo for each day! I missed a day though (ie 20th) so I cheated and I had plenty of close calls too (ie 28th) but overall this month is pretty complete. I definitely liked it more than March.

Using my ipod for take the photos during the core of the exam period was a great idea. At first it felt so wrong to leave my camera untouched. I mean, for over 3 months I had used it at least once a day, every day and suddenly I didn't use it anymore! I was horrified to find my camera starting to get dusty and went back to using it the moment my last "difficult" exam was complete.

Days to Note
April 5 - I realize my brother is taking up more and more time in the washroom getting ready. He combs his hair now. Before he started high school this was unprecedented!
April 7 - Interview for Co-op! I dressed up, wore heels, and confidently walked into a tree branch.
April 9 - Got my taxes done. Well, my parents insisted we should get the accountant to do it for us. There was a long wait and it was at such an inconvenient time. I got treated to Pho after so all was well, haha.
April 11 - I went home it wasn't dark! These days are monumental.
April 14 - Attempted to capture a falling rain drop but failed.

April 18 - A beautiful day with the best weather. I only remember it because I was stuck inside at the library. /bitter
April 22 - I visited the park and took a few shots of the blossoms and flowers. It was cloudy but I got some much needed fresh air.
April 23 - long weekend barbeque

April 25 - Free Love Day.
April 26 - FREEDOM FROM SCHOOL! + watched Hockey

ON TO MAY!

5 weeks

Oddly enough, I have the blankest pages for what should be the busiest time of year for students. I guess writing "study" in every box gets too redundant and should go without saying.

Now that I'm on a break it will be interesting to see how my planner changes. No more assignments due! No more quizzes and exams! So far, I've just been writing down who I'm meeting with that day or what I wish to accomplish around the house (ie. empty out your messy closet!) and etc. It's so incredibly chill right now - it almost doesn't feel right.

Week 14,15,16 (combined!) - All but one of the highlighted sections are when I had exams. I was lucky to have it spaced out over a month but my break just starts later - I think it's a fair trade. The other highlighted section was for an important interview. Hope the results are good!

And this is the week so far. When I don't have the inspiration to draw or the mindset to doodle I tend to write quotes I find on tumblr or around the web. I'll upload a detailed shot soon. :)

Guu Izakaya

My last final exam was written on Tuesday afternoon and after a proper nights rest, it was only natural to go out the next day (and the day after that and the day after that)! If this summer is anything like the summer before, my friends and I will be eating out often and trying new foods. I can't wait!

Our first post-exam adventure led us to Guu, a popular Japanese izakaya-styled restaurant. Whether it is the first time eating at Guu or you are a frequent visitor I think you would be amazed at how loud it is in there. The moment we opened the door we were warmly greeted with waves of shouting from the server at the door to the back where the kitchen was. I liked watching reactions from people when they are greeted like that. My favorite was seeing them full of surprise mixed with uncontrollable laughter.

The menu consisted of many small items and a few mid-sized dishes for, as my friends would say, "getting full". But really, with a couple of small dishes you could get equally full. We learned that the hard way. :P My friends had been there before so they ordered and I tried everything. It was delicious!

I had to be reminded to take these photos! I was so into eating most of the time, I didn't even bother to pick up the camera. Hahaha

Settling in

Instead of doing a massive photo dump of my projects so far I decided to sort them out onto separate pages. Much better organized no?

Although it has only been 4 months since the projects began I already feel nostalgic looking at them! To me, looking back at the photos shows a lot has changed. The worries/stress/ideas/outlook I had while writing in my planner, and the "normal" days I captured in my project 365...it feels different compared to now. My attitude, my goals, my mood...it's not quite the same anymore. If this change is good or bad has yet to be decided and this is probably the beauty of projects like these. We are so caught up with the every day and everything seems static and it's only when we collectively look back we can appreciate how we've changed.

The name "sojoo" roots from "this is so Joany". Somehow in my convoluted thoughts, the name makes sense. On this blog you will find a collection of photos from my every day life. Hope you enjoy and stay for a little while.
